Neo-Classical Photography: Reviving Tradition and Preserving History in a Modern Medium

Abstract

This thesis explores the revival of Neo-Classical principles within the photographic arts, positioning my practice as a leading example of contemporary Neo-Classical portraiture. By blending the precision of historical representation with the ideals of clarity, restraint, and idealism, my work captures the timeless essence of the human experience. Through an analysis of my projects—including SelahChronoVisions, and my military and royal portraits—this thesis demonstrates how Neo-Classical photography bridges the past and present, creating a dynamic interplay of artistic heritage and modern expression.

Introduction

Neo-Classical art, which flourished between the 1760s and 1840s, sought inspiration from the values of ancient Greece and Rome. Characterized by symmetry, restraint, and intellectual rigor, it focused on elevating humanity through idealized representation. Though traditionally associated with painting and sculpture, Neo-Classicism's ethos can find a profound modern interpretation in photography.

This thesis situates my portraiture within the Neo-Classical tradition, illustrating how the medium of photography can preserve historical narratives while maintaining artistic relevance. Through personal projects like Selah and commissioned works such as my royal portraits, I demonstrate a commitment to preserving the essence of Neo-Classical aesthetics while engaging with contemporary themes of leadership, reflection, and identity.

Characteristics of Neo-Classical Art in Photography

Former Mayor of Los Angeles & Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti Portrait Photoshoot Los Angeles (Photographer Rory Lewis 2023)

  1. Subject Matter

    • Neo-Classical photography often explores historical or mythological narratives. My portraits of military leaders and royalty invoke classical ideals, reflecting their stature and contributions to society. The ChronoVisions project, for example, merges speculative fiction with historical allegory, echoing the storytelling approach of Jacques-Louis David.
  2. Style

    • Simplicity and restraint define my photographic approach. By using carefully controlled lighting and minimalistic backdrops, I prioritize composition and texture, mirroring the clean lines of Neo-Classical design.
  3. Composition

    • Strong horizontal and vertical lines dominate my work, establishing balanced and closed compositions that emphasize order and structure. In portraits such as those of H.R.H. The Duke of Kent or Eric Garcetti, the framing enhances the subjects' dignity and gravitas.
  4. Idealized Human Form

    • While maintaining the authenticity of my subjects, I emphasize their idealized qualities. This approach aligns with the Neo-Classical focus on perfection and moral virtue, as seen in Selah's depictions of reflective moments.
  5. Political and Social Commentary

    • Neo-Classical art often reflects on contemporary societal issues. My projects, such as Soldiery, engage with themes of duty, leadership, and history, examining their relevance in modern times.

Preserving History Through Authentic Historical Portraiture

Historical portraiture serves as a bridge between past and present, fostering a deeper understanding of our heritage. My approach combines meticulous research with creative interpretation to recreate the essence of historical figures.

Case Study: Military Portraiture (Soldiery and Soldati della Repubblica)

  • My military portrait series captures the ceremonial and personal dimensions of service. By photographing iconic regiments like the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, I emphasize their historical continuity while portraying the individuals behind the uniforms.
  • Attention to detail, such as the symbolism of a farrier’s ceremonial axe or the saluting tradition of The Blues and Royals, underscores my commitment to authenticity.

Case Study: Royal Portraits

  • Royalty exemplifies Neo-Classical ideals of leadership and moral authority. My portraits of figures such as H.R.H. The Duke of Kent and Admiral Sir Tony Radakin capture their ceremonial roles and personal depth.
  • The Duke of Kent's meditative pose in my portrait reflects noble restraint, recalling the serene grandeur of Neo-Classical art.
  • Admiral Radakin, photographed holding the baton of office, evokes the continuity of leadership, linking his modern responsibilities to centuries-old traditions symbolized by the Duke of Wellington’s coronation baton.

Neo-Classical Themes in Personal Projects

Capturing the Essence of Reflection with Peter Van Norden (Selah Rory Lewis Portrait Photographer Los Angeles)

Selah

This series reflects Neo-Classical ideals through its exploration of spiritual and emotional reflection. Inspired by Caravaggio’s tenebrism, the project uses chiaroscuro lighting to depict subjects in moments of decision and meditation. The simplicity of the settings and the contemplative expressions evoke timeless human truths.

ChronoVisions: An Epochal Fusion

This project combines speculative fiction with historical aesthetics, creating a Neo-Classical commentary on leadership, revolution, and the human condition. By portraying subjects in allegorical settings, ChronoVisions reimagines classical ideals for a modern audience.

Education and Legacy

My work extends beyond art into education, making history accessible to wider audiences. By humanizing historical figures, I bring their stories to life, fostering connections between viewers and the past. For example:

  • My royal and military portraits serve as tools for historical education, emphasizing the continuity of traditions.
  • Exhibitions like Selah and ChronoVisions encourage reflection on moral and philosophical themes, aligning with the Enlightenment spirit of Neo-Classicism.

Challenges and Future Directions

While Neo-Classical photography offers a compelling framework for modern portraiture, it demands a delicate balance between historical fidelity and artistic innovation. Looking ahead, I aim to:

  • Expand projects like Selah and ChronoVisions to explore new narratives and techniques.
  • Collaborate with institutions to preserve historical legacies through portraiture.
  • Advocate for Neo-Classical principles in photographic education and practice.

Conclusion

Neo-Classical photography bridges the past and present, offering a lens through which to explore history, art, and identity. Through projects such as SelahChronoVisions, and my royal and military portraits, I have sought to revive and reinterpret the ideals of Neo-Classicism in a medium uniquely suited to capturing the human experience. By blending historical inspiration with contemporary innovation, my work preserves the timeless essence of Neo-Classical art while charting a path forward for future generations.
